Back with the teachers…

Posted by lakecountyperformingarts on January 20, 2009

Yesterday morning I attended a monthly meeting of the Northwest Suburban Music Teachers Association (NWSMTA), a local chapter of the Illinois State Music Teachers Association (ISMTA).

I went primarily as a marketing opportunity to help spread the word about this website, and let the member instructors know how we could be of help to them and/or their students. About half of the approximately 40 members indicated that they either had studios in Lake County or students from Lake County; I made sure to mention that LCPA could be of service even to those adjacent to our target area.

My thanks to chapter president “Vonnie” Mrozinski for allowing me to speak with the group (though looking back I think it was more of a “ramble”).

After the business of the meeting was concluded, I stayed for the program which was a piano masterclass conducted by Dr. Svetlana Belsky, the exceptionally talented Coordinator of Piano Studies at the University of Chicago. As is the norm for a masterclass, not only did the each of the five participating students receive immediate feedback and expert on-the-spot instruction, but every instructor observing gained insight about some technique, some way of fingering (or pedaling!) or timing.

What a pleasure it was to watch this engaging, exceptionally talented educator and musician at work… a sure sign I was watching a professional!

The Northwest Suburban Music Teachers Association meets the third Monday of every month at 9:45am in the Rolling Meadows Library Conference Room. Interested guests are welcome at the meetings. For more information, please visit the NWSMTA website.

Getting ready for Round 2 (Jan – May)

Posted by lakecountyperformingarts on January 2, 2009

The January calendar looks a little sparse compared to the last several months, but that’s pretty normal as most of the performing groups take a break after their holiday spectaculars and such. Fear not, as we’re scouring websites and press releases for news about the rest of the season.

We do have some interesting auditions coming up, including those for the newly-formed Liberty Town Productions in Libertyville, the state-level 30th Annual Illinois Professional Theatre Auditions, and the search for a diverse pool of talent by Six Flags Great America for the upcoming season.

A couple of organizational events as well: the Illinois Music Educators Association 2009 All-State Conference and the Illinois Flute Society Mid-Winter Festival.

If you come across anything we haven’t listed yet, please let us know… even better, let the people involved know, so they can get in the habit of sending us their info!
